Guerilla filmmaker Brendan Toller unleashes “I NEED THAT RECORD! THE DEATH (OR POSSIBLE SURVIVAL) OF THE INDEPENDENT RECORD STORE,” a documentary feature examining why over 3000 independent record stores have closed across the U.S. in the past decade.

Greedy record labels, media consolidation, homogenized radio, big box stores, Ecommerce, shoddy "stars" pushed by big money, and the digital revolution all pose threats on the very well being of our favorite record stores and the music industry at large. Will these stores die? Will they survive?

Featuring- THURSTON MOORE of Sonic Youth, IAN MACKAYE of Dischord Records Fugazi/Minor Threat, activist/author NOAM CHOMSKY, MIKE WATT of the Minutemen, LENNY KAYE guitarist of the Patti Smith Group, CHRIS FRANTZ of the Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club, guitar composer GLENN BRANCA, PATTERSON HOOD of Drive-By Truckers, PAT CARNEY of the Black Keys, punk author LEGS MCNEIL, rock photographer BOB GRUEN, BP HELIUM guitarist from Of Montreal, and many indie record stores across the U.S. of A!

With amazing animations by MATT NEWMAN!

DVD bonus features include 2+ hours of interviews with THURSTON MOORE, IAN MACKAYE, MIKE WATT, LENNY KAYE, GLENN BRANCA, PATTERSON HOOD, PAT CARNEY and LEGS MCNEIL...

5.12.10 I NEED THAT DVD!

Woo! What a whirlwind couple of weeks for “I Need That Record!” The DVD sold out on Record Store Day! But don’t fret you should be able to still get the DVD exclusively from those wonderful indie retailers for another 90 days until its released on July 27th everywhere.

In other news there’s been over 100 press write ups with the release. Read the awesome story in Rollingstone Online about the flick. Rollingstone also has the first 6 minutes up to get a taste.

We are piecing together a new press section with all the blurbs. Keep checking back for new additions...

Our current fav quote:

I Need That Record! is a Communist Manifesto, a Constitution, the Babylonian Codex of arcane knowledge and confraternity. For that hermeticized dimension of starry eyed art consumers, this flick is indispensable, one-of-a-kind, and a grail. In short, You Need This DVD!”

-Mark S Tucker FAME Review, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange

Such great news all around thus far with the release!

4.11.11 I NEED THAT UPDATE...

Hello hello as I dust off the “I Need That Record!” website. A few things of interest coming up surrounding the film as we approach April 16th Record Store Day 2011!

“I Need That Record!” will be screening for the first time in Middletown, CT. Middletown is of course the hometown of the last Record Express- the store that I grew up with. The deets:

Wesleyan University

Sunday April 17th at 4PM

Shanklin Room 107 on Church Street

Donations will benefit the ever-wonderful WESU...

Unfortunately I won’t be at this screening due to a prior commitment. On the other hand I will be gracing the radio airwaves this Thursday 1PM on the Colin McEnroe show, WNPR. Dig.

Last but not least a “dundee scramp” band The View has recorded a 7 incher covering the Tweeds “I Need That Record.”

Hard at work on my next project- Company Freak- a collagic portrait of Danny Fields...

Rock,

Brendan
